We recognize that CBD and immune system health has become a topic of conversation in the cannabis community. These discussions are merited when they are not financially motivated, so long as the connection between CBD and immune system health remains a topic of conversation and does not evolve into a promotional platform or marketing pitch. In response to this conversation, and to ensure that this conversation is not interpreted unrealistically, we will proceed to provide a general overview of the connection between CBD and immune system health.
Is there evidence supporting a connection between cannabinoids and the immune system? Yes. Should this evidence be interpreted to suggest that cannabinoids’ impact on the immune system can prevent anyone from contracting COVID-19? Absolutely not.
Below we discuss the premises and evidence behind the scientific hypothesis that there is a connection between CBD and immune system health. Though it should not be interpreted unrealistically in the context of our current crisis, there is a significant body of evidence that suggests a connection between cannabinoids and the immune system.
The Endocannabinoid System and Immune System Health
CBD is a cannabinoid that interacts with the body and brain through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), the body’s “master regulatory system” that modulates nearly all of our physiological processes and bodily functions. Consequently, the proper functioning of the ECS is essential to nearly all aspects of our physical and mental health.
The ECS consists of two types of cannabinoid receptors that are found throughout the body and brain: CB1 receptors, which spread throughout the central nervous system, and CB2 receptors, which spread throughout the immune system. The discovery of CB2 receptors on immune system cells led scientists to hypothesize that the endocannabinoid system is involved in immune system function, while the endocannabinoid system relies on cannabinoids to function properly. This is the premise for the suggestion that there is a connection between cannabinoids and the proper functioning of the immune system.
As one study states, cannabinoids “are believed to control immune functions and play a role in immune homeostasis” as “local modulators of immune reactions” (Pandey et al, 2009). Other researchers have suggested that by interacting with CB2 receptors on immune system cells, cannabinoids function as immunomodulators: “The presence of cannabinoid receptors on the cells of the immune system and anecdotal and historical evidence [suggest] that cannabis has potent immuno-modulatory effects.” These hypotheses have served as the premise for research “directed at understanding the function and role of these [cannabinoid] receptors within the context of immunological cellular function” (Crawford and Yamamura, 2005).
In short, many scientists believe that cannabinoids, by regulating the endocannabinoid system, may regulate the immune system as well.
Nonetheless, this evidence cannot be taken out of context. We have always believed, based on this evidence, that CBD can benefit the immune system, and this is an aspect of the overall wellness that we have always encouraged all of our customers to embrace. Yet this evidence should not be interpreted to suggest that CBD may help prevent COVID-19. Currently, the best thing that you can do to protect your health is to follow the aforementioned guidelines by the WHO and CDC.
